Acer Ferrari 1100

Acer

Fast car, faster laptop.  This is a tagline that gets you wondering.  It’s a tagline that makes you think, this computer can’t possibly live up to that kind of hype… or can it?

While the Ferrari isn’t the best computer I’ve ever seen, it’s certainly not bad.  I’m not in love with the price, but it certainly could be worse.  As far as notebooks go, it’s merely ok.  If you want to drop around £1,000 I really suggest going after the Acer gaming machine we reviewed just a few days ago, but if you desperately need a powerful laptop, this probably isn’t it.

  • Processor - AMD Turion 64 X2 mobile technology TL-68 2.4 GHz Dual-Core
  • RAM - 4 GB (installed) 4 GB (max) - DDR2 SDRAM
  • Hard Drive - 320 GB
  • Operating System - Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
  • Screen - 12.1 in TFT active matrix 1280 x 800 24-bit (16.7 million colours)
  • Optical Drive - DVD±RW (+R double layer) / DVD-RAM
  • Bluetooth - Yes
  • Warranty - 1 year warranty

As you can see, the specs certainly aren’t bad.  In fact, you could definitely argue that the specs are above average for any notebook, and they are.  What’s the problem?  The price.  This notebook goes for anywhere from £919 all the way to £1,237.  Now, it’s definitely worth a look if it’s in the £750 to £850 range, but it’s certainly not my laptop of choice for £1,000 or more.  Computing power is gettin cheaper and cheaper, and for a company to charge this kind of cash, they’ll really have to make themselves stand out from the pack.  They can do this by delivering a great product that’s worth the extra money, or they could lower the price.  This notebook might just need to do both.
