In these troubled times (as if we’re not all sick of that statement), it’s good to see that not every industry is in decline. While car manufactures and mortgage lenders and seeing sales fall through the floor, the computer industry is still seeing an increase.

According to market research company Gartner, worldwide shipments of personal computers (excludes business sales) grew by 1.1 percent in the last quarter of 2008. Ok, so it’s not exactly setting the World alight, but in this time of negative stories, let’s look at the positive. It’s an increase!!

Acer are particularly happy having recorded an increase in shipments of well over 30%.  This is reportedly due to their strong sales in netbooks and low priced PC’s.

So who is top of the sales? Well according to Gartner this is the breakdown.

1. Hewlett-Packard  - 55.68 million
2. Dell - 43.1 million
3. Acer - 33.5 million
4. Lenovo 21.8 million
5. Toshiba 13.5 million

In terms of sales, there is a big gap between first place and fifth place Toshiba. At just 13.5 million, should Toshiba be worried? It would be interesting to know who was in 6th place and their volumes. The above figures represent the overall worldwide sales of computers, not just personal computers. World Wide sales are up 10.9% on 2008 - so overall not bad!!!

It will be interesting to see the figures for Q1 2009!
