512GB Solid State Drive from Toshiba
Toshiba have launched a huge 512gb solid state drive. This whopping SSD drive has seriously increased the profile of solid state drives. Up until now one of the disadvantages of solid state drives has been the lack of capacity. Not any more.
The new 512GB drive is 2.5” in size and is some what expensive. However Toshiba are also offering 64GB, 128GB and 256GB versions.
If you’ve got a Notebook or Netbook, don’t worry, you can also get 1.8” models available in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB sizes.
If you’re excited about these new drives, you’ll have to wait until April 2009 when they enter general release.
Benefits of solid state drives:
- Lower power consumption (in most cases)
- Silent running
- Faster start up
- Faster reading of information
- Faster writing of information
Disadvantages:
- Cost
- Amount of storage available (up until now!!!)
I’ve over simplified the benefits and advantages. If you would like a detailed view, take a look at the wikipedia article I’ve referenced below.
