Toshibas first Netbook - the NB100-11R

Toshiba might have been a little slow out of the starting gates with this one, but they’ve certainly come out with a great little offering.
The Toshiba NB100 Series laptop (or netbook) is a great looking machine. If you get the chance to grab hold of one you’ll find it feels as good as it looks.
The Toshiba NB100 fits into the true Netbook category with a 8.9 inch screen making it really portable. I’ve not personally weighed it but according to the specs it weighs in at just 0.999kg! Pretty impressive and almost pocket size!
Currently there appears to be 3 models in the range but I’ve just looked at the base (entry level) model Toshiba NB100-11R. I say ‘entry level’ but really there is less than £50 between this model and the top of the range Toshiba NB100-12A.
According to Toshiba it’s £219 + vat for the 11R model.
So whats included:
• Processor - Intel Atom N270 / 1.6 GHz
• RAM - 512 MB (installed) / 1 GB (max) - DDR2 SDRAM - 667 MHz
• Hard Drive - 80 GB - Serial ATA-150
• Operating System - Ubuntu Netbook Remix
• Screen - 8.9″ TFT 1024 x 600 ( WSVGA ) - TruBrite
• Graphics - Intel GMA 950
• Bluetooth - No
• Notebook Camera - Integrated
• Warranty - 1 year warranty
Bang for your buck – the Toshiba certainly is good. It’s a sold looking machine with great screen quality.
The fact that it comes with Ubuntu is also a big draw. On machines of this size do you really need Windows?
If you look at the majority of uses for machines of this size you’ll be using it for word processing or emails. Ubuntu means its quick to power up, quick to use and less of a memory drain, therefore the fact it’s only got 512mb of memory shouldn’t be an issue.
If you’ve used one, got one or thinking of getting one let us know. Post a comment.
